About Us

I’ve been carving from native hardwoods since 1971. My original teachers were Dewey Owl, a well-known Cherokee woodcarver, and Amanda Crowe, the nationally-known Cherokee carver and teacher of all Cherokee woodcarvers. I also carved for several years with Jack Hall, the master woodcarving teacher at John C. Campbell Folk School, author and teacher E.J. Tangerman, and master carver Harold Enloe of Dogpatch, Arkansas. I continue to learn from contemporary carvers Gary Falin, Carole Jean Boyd, Orchid Davis, Howard Susuki, Helen Gibson, Steve Brown, Mac Profitt and Larry Rogers.

A native of Ohio, I learned woodcarving in the mountains of North Carolina and have been teaching carving since 1975. I’ve taught hundreds of people to carve in Sylva and Franklin, NC, Tallahassee, FL, at John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC, at The Jacksonville Center for the Arts in Floyd, VA, at the Southeastern Woodcarving School, the Florida Woodcarvers Roundup, the Michigan Woodcarvers Roundup, and the Northeastern Woodcarving Roundup in Pennsylvania. I’m a co-founder of Capital City Carvers, the Tallahassee woodcarving club, and serve as the primary instructor for the club,

I’ve exhibited my carvings at the Family Tree Art Show in Tallahassee and the Small Art Show at the Gadsden Art Gallery in Quincy, FL. I’m a member of the Light N Up Artist Cooperative in Havana, FL and my carvings are available for purchase at the shop.  www.lightnupartcoop.com

A former student affairs administrator who worked in colleges and universities in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Maryland and North Carolina, I am retired from my final position as a faculty member in the higher education program at Florida State University. I have time to carve, now!
